-Corix Utilities announced this week they have
reached the one million meter installation milestone for Southern
California Edison's (SCE's) Edison SmartConnect program at a
residence in Redondo Beach, California.
Attending the one millionth meter installation was Theodore F.
Craver Jr., chairman, President and CEO of Edison International,
Congresswoman Jane Harman (D-Venice), Lynda Ziegler, Senior Vice
President of Customer Service, Southern California Edison and
Malcolm Unsworth, President and CEO, Itron.
"I am very proud that Corix has met the challenge in ramping up
for this large project", said Kevin Meagher, Vice President and GM,
Corix Utilities U.S. "We have a team of over 300 employees who are
managing multiple meter form types, meeting production schedules
and installing between 4,000 to 11,000 meters daily".
SCE began the overall planning of this huge project in 2008 by
selecting Corix - a utility industry leader in delivering safe and
reliable customer service - as its authorized installer. Corix put
the first meters in place by September 2009 and will install a
total of approximately 4.5 million by 2012 for residential and
small business customers in SCE's 50,000-square-mile service
territory within Central, Coastal and Southern California.
"Edison SmartConnect meters are digital, secure, two-way
communicating devices that replace traditional mechanical meters
and provide a key step in transforming the electric system to a
smart grid," added Meagher. "Smart meters measure a customer's
electricity usage up-to-the minute and, later this year, SCE's
customers will be able to view their energy usage online to track
how much they use and how much it costs."
