Securing adequate financing for technology product development and commercialization is one of the most difficult challenges facing small and medium sized companies. There are increased signs of investor interest in environmental technologies and clean energy systems, even from within the conventional venture capital market. Interest is also being shown in other environmental-related technologies such as energy-efficient building materials, air and water quality management and remediation systems, and contaminated site cleanup technologies.

However, the harsh reality of investment financing is that very few firms are successful in attracting venture capital. Investors invariably look for senior executives with experience in building successful companies; a proprietary technology in a sector viewed as having terrific market potential; a top-notch technical team; a substantial target market; and experience in selling to solid customers. Those seeking venture capital financing must be prepared to work very hard to build a solid business plan and a compelling argument to support their case.
